SAMUELIS ROZINAS - JEWISH PAINTER FROM LITHUANIA

Samuelis Rozinas (1926, Kaunas (Lithuania) -2006, Tel-Aviv) was a wonderful Jewish painter already from his youth in the Kaunas ghetto. During the Second World War his mother was a prisoner in Stutthof, his father perished in Kaunas ghetto, brothers struggled in partisan resistance squads and were killed by fascists. Samuelis fortuned to escape, took part in the Resistance movement, was badly wounded and saved by the Lithuanian family of Mikalauskas near Trakai (village Sheirishkis). After the war he became a painter, his works are well-known in Russia and Lithuania. Then he emigrated to Israel and lived in Tel-Aviv.

My name is Asya Ardova (Saint-Petersburg, Russia), I am a pianist. I help to my friend, the composer Dmitry Zolotnitsky (born 1945) to find the descendants of the wonderful Jewish painter Samuelis Rozinas (Samuel Rozin). Dmiry Zolotnitsky prepares publications of his author's arrangements of the Jewish traditional songs for different instruments (this time for piano), providing music with unique folk lyrics, explanations and pictures of the Jewish painters. Zolotnitsky is eager to find the descendants of Samuelis Rozinas to ask their permission for using Rozinas' works. The only thing we fortuned to know is, that Samuel Rozin's daughter lives in Israel. So we dared to address to the great memorial centre Yad Vashem, because Rozinas' family was wholly eliminated during the years of Holocaust and he only miraculously escaped.

It started with this letter and later the Yad  Vashem, Magen David Adom (Israel) and the Jewish Helsinki Community kindly helped us to find Mrs Regina Huotari, daughter of Samuil Rozinas and also a painter. BEEZRAT HASHEM!
