It was the International Festival “Music Spring”. The Petersburgian composer Sergei Poddubny invited me to perform piano part together with the cellist Andrey Ivanov in his “Dramatic Intermezzo” for cello and piano. Cello’s timbre evokes dramatic and elegiac perception of reality. It’s like extinguished spirit, extinct volcano, split arches of Pompeii, through which singed top of Vesuvius is distinctly seen on the azure vault of heavens.
The visions of my Italian trip arise in my mind. I see the ancient ruins, looking wretched, but sound under the Southern sun rays.
Everything is petrified, but ready to outburst, like this impish Faun
dancing non-stop.
What does piano depict? I tried to interpret this part as something innate for any composer since there appeared Liszt’s majestic "Cypresses of Villa d’Este"
with ever-impish fountains hidden in the low bows and bursting out, and humourously erupting and vivifying every microcosm around them.
